Ngorongoro crater
The world's largest inactive caldera, covering about 260 square kilometres and 600 metres deep. It is a protected area known as Ngorongoro Conservation Aream located about 180km from Arusha in the Ngorongoro district. The conservation area also protects the Olduvai Gorge, which is situated in the plains area. It is considered to be the seat of humanity after discovering the earliest known specimens of the human genus - Homo Habilis.
Ngorongoro crater is home to approximately 25,000 large animals, like the Black Rhinoceros being an endangered species, the African buffalo or Cape buffalo and the hippopotamus. Other animals include the Wildebeest, Thomson's gazelles, Waterbucks found mainly near the Lerai Forest. Lake Magadi, located on the southwest of the crater is inhabited by thousands of Flamingoes. The crater is also known to have the most dense number of lions.
